Team Liquigas' Vincenzo Nibali showed his good form prior to this weekend's Italian National Road Championships with an impressive win at Wednesday's Giro dell'Appenino. Nibali attacked on the final climb of the race to distance himself from an elite remaining group to take the prestigious pre-Tour de France race, his first of the season.

Team Liquigas' Polish climbing star Sylvester Szmyd won his first professional race atop Mont Ventoux in the Dauphiné Libéré's fifth stage. Known for setting a furious pace for his captains on the slopes of the Giro d'Italia, Szmyd broke away on the feared climb with Alejandro Valverde to taste victory for himself.

Franco Pellizotti Third in Giro d'Italia

Team Liquigas' Franco Pellizotti, fourth in the 2008 Giro d'Italia, moved up one step to take his first podium in Italy's grand tour. With an emphatic win on the 17th stage climb up the feared Blockhaus, Pellizotti continually improved in the final week of the race to ensure podium success. After Sunday's exciting finale in Rome, 'Pelli' finished the race 1:59 behind overall winner Denis Menchov.

The performance also saw the Venetian rider jump past Carlos Sastre and into third place overall. Teammate Ivan Basso finished fifth on the stage and climbed into fourth overall.
